HSDL - Draft

High School Distance Learning (HSDL) is high school credit only, not college credit or AP credit.

High School Distance Learning can assist schools and students in many situations:

  • Needing recovery credit
  • Scheduling conflicts
  • Offering other courses
  • Wanting different instructional format options
  • Looking for advancement credit to graduate early
  • Requiring wider academic range
  • Needing a summer school option

 

Courses are:

  • Accredited
  • Asynchronous
    • They start any time of year (not fall-spring-summer semesters)
  • Courses can be completed at faster/slower pace as needed
  • Courses are either online or correspondence/packet format
  • Ask if desired course is not listed

 

Online courses for high school use:

  • Are preloaded (not Zoom)
  • Activities are self-guided
  • Have a facilitator available to grade assignments, tests, or answer questions
  • List of HSDL online courses (link to D)

 

Correspondence/packet courses for high school use:

  • Textbook, testing, and workbook materials provided
  • Low readability, high interest textbooks
  • Often used in alternative classrooms
  • Students can go at their own pace
  • Intentionally different than online
    • For instance, Earth Science packet doesn’t share textbook/assignments/tests with Earth Science online

Registration for High School students

  • High school will register student for courses, not parent or student
  • This ensures correct course will be taken and will be accepted
  • Register for High School Distance Learning

 

Details

Courses are $175 per course semester

  • The school pays when registering the student
  • If a school wants the parent to pay instead, that is negotiated between high school and the parent

 

Students have 4 months to complete a course after registration is processed

 

Upon successful completion, the high school will receive a certificate from HSDL

  • This certificate can be used as an official record for the student file and added to the student transcript

University Students needing High School credits

• Call 319-784-1510 to register

o Have credit card information ready

o Tell them you are a University student

o $175 per course semester

• Physics and Spanish III courses are online only

o It’s all preloaded, not Zoom

• University students often need both Semester 1 and Semester 2

o Check with your University advisor if not certain

• Courses have four months to complete

o You can go at a faster pace than four months if beneficial

• The four months begin at registration date

o Not college Fall/Spring/Summer semester calendar

o Wait to register until you are ready to begin course

o It’s an online course, so won’t run out of “seats” for students

• Don’t register for Semester 2 at the same time as Semester 1

o Both courses would have the same start/end date if you did

o Registering at separate times allows S-2 to have a separate

four months than S-1

• Unit tests need to be proctored

o University of Iowa Test Center is common

o Alternative testing locations possible, but check
